Do-It-Yourself Furnace Troubleshooting Tips
Have you inspected your heating system recently? If it has been more than one year, Fox Service Company recommends having a trained professional do a complete system inspection. This inspection will ensure your system is operating properly, or if it is not, will identify areas that can be tuned-up or repaired to return your system to normal operation.
There are some things that each homeowner should know to check, and have a good knowledge of troubleshooting tips. Here are some things you can do yourself to check the proper functioning of your furnace and heating system. After inspecting your system, if you have concerns or questions, contact Fox Service Company and let us know your issues or problems. Our award-winning service professionals are here to help you.
- Replace the furnace air filters regularly. Be sure and use the correct size for your furnace, and ensure they are installed properly. Depending on the amount of system usage, pet dander, hair or fur, dust and other contaminants in the air, Fox Service Company recommends changing your air filter every 30 to 90 days.
- Check your supply and air registers, or “vents”. When your furnace is operating in the “heat” mode, hold your hand in front of each register. The return register (often a large vent in a central hallway, but can be in several or all rooms in some homes) should have a slight pull or suction as it intakes air into the system. The supply vents should each be blowing warm air into the respective room.If you do not feel a pull of air form the return vent, or a steady flow of warm air from each of the supply vents, call a service professional to conduct a thorough inspection.
- Check for excessive lint, clogging dustballs, hair, or other material that may be impeding the flow of air into return vents and out of supply vents. If you suspect an issue, take of vent covers and use a flashlight to look deep into the vents. If you see clutter in the vent piping, you should have your vents professionally cleaned.
- Keep all vents and the furnace itself free of clutter to ensure free flow of air, and to avoid potential overheating of the system. Poor airflow can cut the lifetime of your furnace and also cause it to work harder while producing less efficiently.
